This won't make one whit of difference, but it made me feel good to write it.
Ms. Pelosi,
With all due respect, why will no one in the Democratic Party attempt to control the Clintons drive for power at any cost? Why are these people allowed to do whatever they want with the Party's reputation and future? Does ANYONE in the Party care about this?
Many are asking how Hillary Clinton can declare Senator Obama unfit for the presidency, while at the same time suggest he'd be the perfect choice for VP. I think I know the answer. If Hillary were elected president, and if anything were to happen to her and Obama had to step into her shoes--why should she care if he's not prepared? It won't be her problem anymore. She's made it more than clear that nothing beyond her own selfish ambitions--and those of her husband--concerns her.
Having said all this I must declare I'm not a Democrat. I'm an independent voter who voted Republican in the last presidential and state elections. Before that, I was a Democrat for 18 years. Now, once again, I'm ready to support a Democratic candidate in Senator Obama. And it seems clear I'm not alone in this feeling. He has the majority of pledged delegates and votes, and even with Hillary's slight edge in superdelegates, he's still ahead. It's impossible for her to catch up or pass him. The Clintons can't deny this, yet they continue to do so, hoping for a divisive convention. HOPING FOR A DIVISIVE CONVENTION. How is this okay? Why?
I've always thought the Democratic Party, given its varied base, has had to rely on personality, rather than platform, in order to be united--which is why President Clinton was so powerful and achieved so much. This time I feel a change. When listening not only to Senator Obama, but to those he inspires and connects with on fundamental issues, I feel a pull towards a broader mobilization--perhaps broader than ever seen before in either party--a foundation coming into focus that the Party can build its future on. I sense a collective strength and power in the Party I've never felt before. Ever. We, together, can take this country in a new direction, usher in a new era. Hillary Clinton is doing her best to destroy all that. She's putting herself and her singular ambition first.
I know it's impossible for Senator Clinton to be made to see the error of her callous, self-serving actions--she simply doesn't care. But I don't think it's impossible for the Party itself to take charge and impose some kind of common sense and order. Or at least try. Make an effort. She should be heavily leaned on to LEAVE THE RACE. Obama would have been laughed out of it long ago had he attempted to do what Senator Clinton is doing now.
If the Clintons succeed, the Party might just as well change its name to the Clinton Party. The Democratic Party, as it once was, will be alive only in history books.
Won't you step in? Or at least make your voice heard--unless of course you support Hillary's scorched earth tactics. I like to think that's not the case.
